By mid-2024, my portfolio and personal brand had become a masterclass in bland.

Minimalist design, post-it note workshop pictures, case studies full of UX buzzwords like "Bridge the gap between users' needs & business goals." Oof.. inspiring right? Every element designed to signal "serious professional." Every element exactly like thousands of other designers work.

I felt like I was slowly disappearing behind a wall of the professional stuff.

💔 The Unexpected Plot Twist

But the real catalyst for change wasn't professional…it was deeply personal.

When my dad passed away that year, everything I thought mattered suddenly felt empty. The carefully crafted portfolios, the work I was doing, the professional image…none of it seemed quite as important anymore.

Grief has a way of cutting through all the bullshit. I was struggling to find joy in work, in creativity, in much of anything.

During some therapeutic loft cleaning, my partner found some dusty trading cards including some Pokemon cards and came down one evening with a simple question…

"Want to try something different?" he asked, holding up a booster pack. "Maybe we could open a few cards each evening. Just for fun. I’ll teach you how to play too."

✨ Finding the Magic

At first, opening Pokemon cards felt a little silly.

Two adults hunched over our living room floor with trading cards like kids again? But something unexpected happened in those moments…I started remembering what genuine excitement felt like.

The anticipation of peeling back that wrapper. The joy of discovering a card I loved (usually based on pure cuteness factor). The simple pleasure of collecting something beautiful and if you’re lucky holographic!

What started as a bit of distraction became something more important: I was rediscovering what excited me again. For the first time in months, I was engaging with something purely because it brought me joy, not because it advanced my career or impressed anyone else.

Those evening card games became my pathway back to genuine excitement. And that renewed sense of what I actually enjoyed? It sparked some creativity again!

🚀 The Quest Begins

Several weeks later, I was procrastinating on redesigning my website when I found myself cross-legged on the living room floor, holding up a holographic Blissey card to the light.

Something about that little pink healing Pokemon with all it’s abilities sparked a thought that would change everything.

I looked at my favourite cards spread across the floor - Chansey with her healing powers, Mew with transformation abilities and Vulpix with her fire magic. Each card solved specific problems for trainers. Each had unique abilities that made battles more manageable.

And then the lightbulb moment hit.

What if my clients' challenges were like Pokemon abilities? What if I could create "cards" that helped clients defeat their specific dragons?

Instead of boring bullet points about "user research" and "competitor research," what if I created some Beasts to Defeat:

• The Demand Dragon: A formidable beast that guards the secret of sustainable market demand → defeat with tools like market research

• Camouflaged Chameleon: A cunning and elusive creature, blending seamlessly to hide it’s true user needs → defeat tools like with user research

• Competition Hydra: A relentless, multi-headed beast representing rival companies, as one gets cut down another emerges → defeat with tools like competitor analysis

Suddenly, I wasn't describing benefits or using UX buzzwords. I was offering magical solutions to epic business battles. ⚔️

🏰 Building the Fantasy World

The Pokemon card insight sparked something much bigger than I initially realised.

Every project really is a quest with challenges to overcome and victories to celebrate. If clients were facing dragons, then I was their Wizard to guide them through treacherous digital realms. If startups were navigating choppy waters, then I was the designer helping them reach their promised land.

The quest theme wasn't a gimmick, it reflected how I genuinely see the work I do with clients. Real transformation and magic ✨ (cue sparkles).

I spent weeks developing this world:

• Business challenges became mythical beasts

• Client services turned into epic quests

• Solutions transformed into magical abilities

• Success metrics became treasure collected along the journey

My website evolved from generic portfolio to an enchanted realm where serious business strategy met playful imagination.

It was the most authentic representation of myself I'd ever created. For the first time, my professional brand felt like... me.

I launched my quest-themed website, complete with fantasy elements and Pokemon-inspired UX cards. It felt vulnerable putting something so different and playful out there.

But to my surprise…within two weeks, I landed a 3-month project!

That became an 8-month ongoing engagement. All because I finally showed my weird, wonderful side at work.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of listing what AI is “good” or “bad” at—like a comparison chart. But the real magic? It’s in how we, as designers, meet those gaps with the stuff AI can’t do.

AI is amazing at riffing on ideas fast. It can whip up visuals, distill loads of info, and spot patterns in data quicker than we can say “sticky note.” But it stumbles on the more nuanced bits—like emotional tone, brand personality, meaningful constraints, and (let’s be honest) it sometimes confidently serves up things that are totally wrong.

Designing well with AI doesn’t mean pretending those gaps don’t exist—it means knowing where to step in. It’s your creative instinct that brings the soul: the part that spots when something feels off, that sees the bigger emotional picture, that adds character, context, and clarity.

This is where you shine. You bring the constraint that turns chaos into coherence. You choose fewer options to help users focus. You make a sterile layout feel like it’s giving you a wink.

That’s not extra—that’s essential. And it’s what transforms AI’s “good start” into something genuinely magical.

AI might ace execution, but it's hopelessly lost when it comes to genuine storytelling.

Sure, it can generate a perfectly adequate checklist UI or a competent onboarding flow. But it will never sense when a user needs a playful nudge, a moment of unexpected delight, or that tiny spark of joy hidden in a tooltip that makes them smile on a difficult day.

These moments of magic come from somewhere AI can't access—lived human experience, emotional intelligence, and a deep understanding of what makes us human.

Nurturing Your Creative Spark

Here's how to protect and strengthen your irreplaceable creative intuition while working alongside AI:

• Stay curious beyond screens: Regularly step outside your digital environment. Sketch on paper, visit museums, wander through nature, observe strangers in cafés—anything that stimulates fresh perspectives that haven't been fed into AI models.

• Practice mindful reflection: Take short breaks during your design sessions to ask yourself, "Does this feel right?" Trust those gut reactions—they're drawing on thousands of hours of experience and connection you’ve lived.

• Ask deeper questions: Use AI to generate quick solutions, then pause to evaluate. Is this merely convenient, or is it genuinely delightful? Would your actual users feel seen and understood by this design? What truths is it missing?

• Design for emotional moments first: Embrace the Psychology of Delight early in your process. Identify the key emotional transitions in your user journey, then design those moments intentionally before filling in the functional gaps.

✨ Take Finch as an example: It's not just another habit tracker app—it's a cheerful little bird companion that celebrates your smallest wins and makes self-care feel like nurturing a friend rather than completing chores. These emotional hooks come from deeply understanding human psychology, not from algorithmic pattern-matching.

Remember, your "magic dust"—those tiny moments of surprise, delight, and human connection—comes from being deeply human yourself. AI can't replicate your instinct for noticing subtle emotional needs or your ability to tell stories that resonate on a human level.

Your taste, your unique perspective, your intuition—these aren't just nice-to-haves. They're your most valuable and irreplaceable assets.

Okay, theory is one thing, but how do we actually work with AI day-to-day without feeling overwhelmed or creatively compromised?

After nearly a year of experimentation (and plenty of missteps), I've developed a step-by-step approach that helps me harness AI's efficiency while protecting the creative spark that makes designs truly magical. Here's the framework I use in my own workflow:

🧭 1. Define the Quest (Led by you)

Always start with the "why" behind the design challenge—not just the what. What user frustrations or desires are you addressing? What emotions do users bring to this experience? What transformation are you hoping to create?

This emotional grounding gives everything that follows both clarity and purpose. The better you understand the human context, the more focused and effective your AI collaboration will be.

Pro tip: Create a one-paragraph "quest brief" that captures the emotional core of what you're creating before involving AI.

🪄 2. Summon the Ally (AI-Powered)

With your quest clearly defined, it's time to invite AI into your creative process. I use different AI tools for different needs:

• Claude, ChatGPT, Google Gemini for rapid ideation and concept generation, user flows, and initial content drafts.

• Midjourney or ChatGPT’s new 4o model for visual mood boards and style exploration, along with Figma for your own ideation.

• Claude for quick and early prototype exploration with code.

• Replit and Bolt.ai for interactive fully coded prototypes “vibe coding”.

✨ Real Example: When designing a new product feature, I fed Claude extensive context—project briefs, user personas, competitor analysis, brand guidelines—before asking for concepts. The quality of AI output directly reflects the quality of context you provide. Be generous with background information, just as you would brief a team mate.

3. Evaluate with Heart (Led by you)

This is where your unique value shines the brightest. Review AI suggestions not just for their technical merit, but for their emotional resonance and human touch:

• Does this solution feel genuinely delightful or merely adequate?

• Will real users feel understood and cared for?

• Does it reflect the specific personality and values of your brand?

• What subtle emotional needs is the AI missing?

You are the art director here. Your design expertise, lived experience, taste, and emotional intelligence are irreplaceable in separating what works from what truly resonates.

🔄 4. Refine with Intention (Teamwork)

Now comes the dance of refinement—an iterative process where you guide AI toward more emotionally resonant solutions.

✨ Real Example: Refining a Replit prototype for a draggable side panel involved continuous iteration. While AI quickly produced a working concept in minutes, achieving the right feel—smooth animations, appropriate feedback, intuitive behavior—required multiple rounds of human-directed refinement. This detailed crafting took the longest but made the difference between "functional" and "delightful."

Then came user testing day. I watched as user after user completely ignored our carefully crafted guidance. They clicked "skip" without a second thought, and my heart sank. All that work, dismissed with a hasty click.

But here's the weird part – some of those same users who skipped the onboarding? They later became our most engaged power users.

This contradiction haunted me.

If our standard onboarding wasn't responsible for their success, what hidden forces were at work? What subtle signals had we inadvertently woven into the product that built enough trust for users to stick around and flourish?

This started me on a quest to discover something I now call "hidden trust signals" – the subtle, often invisible elements that actually build user confidence and loyalty. And what I found was pretty mind-blowing.

At MyWorld, we actually increased user retention by 53% by delaying access to certain tools. Yes, you heard that right – by adding strategic friction, not removing it.

We've been trained to follow certain onboarding "best practices": reduce friction at all costs, get users to their "aha!" moment ASAP, and showcase all your fancy features immediately.

But research consistently showed these "best practices" often don't test well. Users feel overwhelmed or disconnected from products, even when they dutifully complete onboarding checklists.

As one participant in a study we did confessed: "I completed the tutorial, but I still didn't really know what to do next."

Traditional onboarding often bombards users with tooltips and walkthroughs. But our research revealed something fascinating: users trust products that make them feel competent, not overwhelmed.

At Picsart, we discovered that users clicked on our prominent "Getting Started" card less than 20% of the time. However, when we replaced it with contextual guidance at moments of potential confusion, engagement skyrocketed.

Instead of presenting the full power of their database upfront, they start with a familiar spreadsheet-like interface. As users become comfortable, Airtable subtly introduces more advanced capabilities, allowing users to gradually expand their knowledge without feeling lost.

We knew users craved powerful editing tools, but simply showing them everything at once led to overwhelm and abandonment. How could we create a sense of discovery and mastery, rather than intimidation?

Linear's approach to project management exemplifies this. New users are guided through creating a simple task, assigning it to a team member, and setting a due date. Progressive Complexity

Midjourney provides a perfect example in the AI art world. New users start with simple text prompts like "/imagine a cat wearing a hat". As they experiment, they're gradually introduced to more advanced parameters: aspect ratios, styles, chaos levels, and even the ability to blend images. This staggered approach allows users to feel a sense of continuous learning and discovery.

The common thread? These aren't just about delaying features; they're about carefully crafting a learning journey that builds user confidence and competence.

Earning Trust Upfront

The most trustworthy products don't just promise value; they deliver it immediately. This "give before you ask" approach creates a powerful reciprocity loop, building trust from the very first interaction.

At Picsart, we created an interactive "guided edit" that allowed users to experience our key features in a structured way before asking them to create something independently. This wasn't just a tutorial; it was a chance to feel the magic of the tool before committing to a full editing workflow. Our studies showed that users described this experience as "empowering" and "surprisingly easy."

Loom offers free video recording with their branding, allowing users to experience the core value – quick, easy video messaging – without any initial financial commitment. This not only demonstrates the product's functionality but also creates a viral loop as users share their videos.

Weaving Moments of Unexpected Delight

Strategic charm isn't about sprinkling random confetti effects throughout your product. It's about orchestrating meaningful moments of delight that reinforce trust and deepen user connection at precisely the right moments.

I've noticed this pattern across many successful apps:

Personalised Discovery

Spotify's annual "Wrapped" feature is a masterclass in personalized delight. It's not just a fun summary of listening habits; it's a demonstration that Spotify understands the user, creating a sense of connection and loyalty. By showcasing unique listening patterns and highlighting personal "top artists" and "top songs," Wrapped reinforces the feeling that Spotify is their platform, tailored to their individual tastes.

Effort Recognition

Asana's whimsical celebrations, like a unicorn or yeti flying across the screen after a completed task, acknowledge user effort in a delightful way. This isn't just random animation; it's strategically placed at a moment of accomplishment, providing a small dose of positive reinforcement.

Unexpected Helpfulness

Duolingo does this exceptionally well. When you make a mistake, you get a supportive notification from Duo the owl that encourages you to keep going. These don't feel annoying and help you see the app as more of a companion than "just" an app.

🪄 Casting These Spells In Your Product

A Practical Guide

Here's a quick checklist to audit and action these patterns in your own product:

Sometimes, it's the beginning of a love story. Here's what that transformation looks like in three of today's most beloved products.

Superhuman: Complexity → Identity

💔 Before - "This feels like paying $30/month to make email harder." — Actual App Store review, 2019. When Superhuman launched in 2014, they promised to revolutionise email. But asking users to abandon familiar Gmail habits for an entirely new workflow sparked immediate resistance.

💘 The Turning Point - For most users, the first few days felt impossible. Keyboard shortcuts replaced familiar mouse clicks, and old email habits had to be unlearned. But those who stuck with it for just one week discovered they could process email twice as fast—turning initial frustration into a powerful "aha" moment.

✨ The Magic - Superhuman didn't just teach shortcuts; they transformed users' identity. Every mastered command became a badge of honour. Every swift inbox clear became proof: "I'm not just an email user. I'm an email ninja.”

The Proof - Superhuman's impact is jaw-dropping: at Brex, employees now respond to emails 3x faster, saving 183 hours monthly across their team. With 50,000+ paying customers including Spotify, Notion, and Dropbox, users aren't just tolerating the learning curve—they're investing $30/month for the privilege of mastering it.

They now claim teams that use Superhuman “save 4 hours per person every single week.”

Midjourney: Confusion →Craft

💔 Before - "Why can't this just be a normal app? Discord is confusing and my prompts never work!" — Common user complaint, 2022. Midjourney's unconventional Discord interface and complex prompt system initially alienated many users who expected a simple image generator.

💘 The Turning Point - The first dozen images often looked nothing like what users imagined. But those who persisted discovered that each "failed" prompt taught them something about the AI's visual language. Within two weeks, users started crafting prompts with the precision of a skilled designer.

💔 Before - "Our header alone had over a dozen places to click, and included two search bars" — Slack's own admission in 2020. The interface was a maze of dense menus, countless settings, and hidden features. For many, it felt like learning an entire operating system just to send messages.

💘 The Turning Point - The initial overwhelm gradually gave way to discovery. Users found that each "extra" feature—from channel organisation to custom workflows—wasn't just complexity for complexity's sake. Each element served a purpose in transforming team communication.

✨ The Magic - Slack didn't just create a chat app; they built digital headquarters. Teams developed their own cultures through custom emojis, automated workflows, and shared ways of working. What started as a communication tool became the fabric of company culture—complete with inside jokes, shared shortcuts, and workspace traditions.

The Proof - Today, 65 million monthly active users spend 90 minutes daily in Slack, executing 5 billion actions weekly. With a projected revenue of $4.2 billion by 2025, it's clear that users aren't just accepting the learning curve—they're building their digital work lives around it.

🪄 Designing the Magic Ratio: Challenge vs. Delight

It's clear: the right kind of effort creates invested users. But how do you find that sweet spot? Too much challenge frustrates; too little leaves users feeling unattached.

I learned this firsthand designing benefit application forms. My instinct was to minimise steps. But ultra-streamlined forms led to more errors and frustration. By strategically adding friction—clear expectations, checklists, validation—we improved the experience. Users succeeded on their first try and felt more confident.

Here's how to find your product's magic ratio:

Step 1: Good Friction vs. Bad Friction – A Quick Audit

Categorize the effort users expend in your product:

• Good Friction: Builds skills, creates ownership, yields satisfaction.

  • Example: Learning Notion's database system (initially complex, ultimately empowering).

• Bad Friction: Wastes time, creates frustration, no payoff.

  • Example: Re-entering the same information across multiple screens.

Step 2: Add Rituals That Make Effort Satisfying

Rituals make mundane actions satisfying. Think: checking off to-dos, reaching milestones.

💡 Identify: Is there a frequent action in your product that could become a rewarding ritual?

➕ Add: Streaks, progress indicators, celebrations—make effort feel worthwhile.

Example: The achievement system in the image below transformed routine interactions into milestones, providing a sense of progression that boosted long-term engagement.

Step 3: Eliminate Pointless Work. Ruthlessly.

Not all friction is good. Be honest: which parts of your product feel like busywork? I redesigned a recruitment app, automating anything that didn't directly solve the user's problem (auto-filling CV details). The friction we kept was only what helped users find the right solution.

Key Principle: Every bit of effort should deliver proportional value. If it doesn't, remove it.

The Perfect Balance

It's not about no effort; it's about the right effort.

Ask yourself:

• Are you making users work for features they don't care about?

• Are valuable features too forgettable because they're too easy?

I used to believe what everyone in product design preaches: make it frictionless! Remove steps! Simplify everything!

Then I noticed something surprising.

The products I couldn't live without weren't the easiest ones. They were the ones that made me work a little.

The quest begins... ✨

I've spent years obsessing over why some SaaS products create fanatic loyalty while others with similar features are forgotten in weeks. After countless product teardowns and my own painful lessons, I've discovered something that flies in the face of conventional wisdom:

The "magic formula" often includes a dash of deliberate friction.

In this article, I'm going to challenge that "frictionless is always better" and show you:

• Why humans are wired to value what they work for (even when they complain about it)

• The psychological principles that transform effort into emotional attachment

• How to identify which types of friction build loyalty and which just frustrate users

• The three key ingredients that turn initial struggle into long-term commitment

🪝Rethinking Friction – Why "Effort" Is the Real Hook

I remember sitting in a client meeting where everyone was nodding along to the mantra "reduce steps at all costs." I nodded too, but something felt off.

If friction is always bad, why do I still use Notion every single day when simpler note-taking apps exist?

The truth hit me while designing a user journey for a council service. We started by creating the shortest possible path to check bin collection days – just enter your postcode and boom, there's your answer.

But users were still calling the support line. Why? Because the frictionless journey was missing critical details. Sometimes bins weren't collected as scheduled or reported on time, and without asking a few more questions, we couldn't help users report the right problem.

💡 Adding "friction" – a few more targeted questions – actually reduced frustration. Users got the right solution faster, even though it took more steps.

Here’s where a mentality shift might help: instead of framing “friction” as a universal nuisance, what if we saw it as a tool for deeper engagement when used intentionally?

The Effort-Value Paradox

Nearly every product design trend is chasing ease and speed. But humans value what they fight for. Ease doesn't create attachment—hard-earned moments do.

When was the last time you felt truly proud of something that took zero effort? Probably never.

Our brains are wired to remember emotional peaks, not the smooth, flat lines of effortless experiences.

Effort triggers the brain's reward systems—creating dopamine during struggle AND after achievement. Hard products literally feel better long-term.

The Friction Audit Your Product Needs

Look at your product's touch-points and ask two questions:

1. Where are users working too hard for too little reward?

2. Where are things so easy that users don't feel invested?

Make Users Better Versions of Themselves

The most powerful products don't just help users complete tasks – they transform users into someone new and improved.

The key question: What is the aspirational version of your user? What role does your product play in that metamorphosis?

Example - Strava: Strava isn't just a fitness tracker; it transforms users into athletes. When one of my friends started using Strava, they weren't a 'runner' – they were someone who occasionally jogged. The effort of consistently recording workouts, analysing performance data, and competing with others on segments fosters a sense of athletic identity and accomplishment. Their "Best Efforts Challenges" track users' fastest times, encouraging continual improvement toward their aspirational athletic self.

Ingredient 2: Ownership

Make Users Feel "This Is Mine"

I used to hate Notion's block editor. Coming from simple apps like GoodNotes, the learning curve felt steep and unnecessary. What's with all these slash commands? Why do I need to understand "databases"?

Six months later, I was creating custom dashboards for every project and couldn't imagine working any other way. The initial friction became my superpower 🦸‍♀️.

Notion just gets this right. I've spent countless hours customising my workspace, creating intricate systems with their database functionality, and personalising pages with custom designs. Now I'm trapped – in the best way. The thought of switching to another tool and losing my carefully crafted system feels painful. I'm emotionally attached to what I've built.

Ingredient 3: Progressive Mastery

Level Up Users Skills

People love getting better at things, especially when they can see their progress. The best products create clear paths to mastery with increasing rewards along the way.

Example - Headspace: Their approach to meditation mastery is brilliant – beginners start with a gentle 5-minute session that introduces the basics. As you progress, you unlock new content (you can't skip ahead), gain access to longer sessions, and advance through increasingly sophisticated techniques. The clear progression from novice to experienced meditator creates a powerful sense of achievement that keeps users coming back

The Secret Ingredient: Meaningful Effort

I used to chase frictionless perfection in every product I designed. I'd eliminate steps, simplify interfaces, and remove any obstacle in the user's path.

But I was solving the wrong problem.

The products we can't live without aren't the easiest ones—they're the ones that ask for meaningful investment and deliver proportional rewards. They transform us, give us a sense of ownership, and provide a path to mastery.

Where in your user’s journey are you offering the chance for deeper connection?

Turn intentional effort into a source of deeper engagement —build products that don’t just solve problems but invite users into a shared experience they won’t want to leave.

Last year, I lost my dad. 🪽

In product design, we often talk about "aha moments" - those magical moments when users suddenly understand the value of what we've built. We meticulously craft these experiences, knowing they can transform a casual user into a devoted advocate.

But sometimes, life designs its own aha moments. They arrive uninvited, unpolished, and hit with the subtlety of a system crash. My dad’s passing was such a moment.

In the aftermath, I discovered something unexpected: grief is the ultimate user researcher. It asks the hard questions we've been avoiding:

• Why are we running life in perpetual sprint mode without any retrospectives?

• Who defined these default patterns we're following without questioning?

• When did we stop designing our lives with intention and start living in "quick fix" mode?

The answers revealed an uncomfortable truth:

I had been treating my life like a product in perpetual sprint mode—always shipping, never reflecting.

Sound familiar?

🌟 The Tale of Two Paths

I recently discovered a concept that changed my perspective: Living by Default vs. Living by Design.

Living by Default is like running a product with a mountain of technical debt:

• Shipping features without documentation (living without reflecting)

• Prioritising speed over longevity

• No clear information architecture for making decisions

Living by Design, by contrast, mirrors crafting a brilliant design system. It’s about:

• Building with scalability and sustainability in mind

• Setting clear goals for functionality and eliminating unnecessary complexity

• Implementing patterns that support—not overwhelm—the user (you!)

• Running regular retrospectives to recalibrate priorities

🗺️ Mapping the Journey: A Real-World Example

A few months ago, I found myself drowning in the day-to-day grind of email replies and follow-ups. My process was chaotic—I’d lose threads, forget replies, and scramble to reconnect later.

Realising I was stuck in "Living by Default," I reframed the issue as a scaling problem:
“What would this process look like if I were building it for a product instead of my inbox?”

The solution? A simple tracking template—a "design system" for my emails. With clear statuses and next steps for every email, I turned communication chaos into a scalable, intentional workflow.

This shift wasn’t just efficient—it was a reminder that even chaos can be designed into clarity.

Here’s the exact Notion template I used to go from chaos to a sustainable CRM system.

🧠 Life by Design: A Product Designer's Laws of Living

As designers, we use proven patterns to guide users through digital experiences. Recently, I've discovered these same principles can illuminate our life journeys in unexpected ways.

Here are five Laws of UX that have helped me navigate this season of grief and growth:

1. Flow State Law
   As a UX principle: The mental state where a person is fully immersed and energised in the process of an activity
   As a life principle: Flow — Instead of forcing productivity in moments of grief, I've learned to recognise my natural rhythms. Some days are for deep work, others are for deep feeling. Both are valid states of flow.

2. Law of Prägnanz
   As a UX principle: People will perceive complex images in their simplest form possible

   As a life principle: Essence — When life feels overwhelming, I've learned to seek simplicity. Instead of trying to solve everything at once, I focus on distilling each day down to its essence - what truly matters right now? Sometimes that's work, sometimes it's just taking a walk with Nacho.

3. Hick's Law

   As a UX principle: Decision time increases with the number and complexity of choices
   As a life principle: Choices — By simplifying my daily choices by categorising my to-dos into "core tasks" (must do) and "bonus tasks" (could do). I've created more mental space for processing and growth.

4. Selective Attention

   As a UX principle: People can only focus effectively on a select number of items at once

   As a life principle: Focus — I've learned to be gentle with myself when I can't maintain the same level of attention as before and juggle as much. Some seasons require us to narrow our focus to just the essentials.

5. Serial Position Effect

   As a UX principle: People best remember the first and last items in a series

   As a life principle: Bookends — Each day, I try to bookend my time with meaningful moments - starting with intention and ending with reflection. These anchors help me stay grounded even when the middle feels messy.

These aren't just cliche design principles - they're guides for crafting a more intentional life quest.

Just as we design products to support users through their journey, we can design our lives to support us through both the victories and the valleys.

✨ Field Notes: A New Way Forward

In the business world, we often celebrate the warriors who never rest, the mages casting spells without cooldowns, and the adventurers forever chasing their next quest. Yet, as any good product designer knows, relentless effort without thoughtful iteration leads to burnout—or worse, bad outcomes.

The truth is, our best work—and our best selves—emerge when we learn to pause, reflect, and choose intentionally. Over the past year, I’ve been experimenting with what it means to design a life that’s aligned with these principles.

Here’s how you can apply them with practical steps, inspired by my journey:

→ White Space is Essential

In product design, white space isn’t empty; it’s functional. It directs focus and ensures clarity amidst complexity.

For me, walking with Nacho through nature reserves isn’t just exercise—it’s prototyping space for calm and clarity (and often where I get ideas for these articles!).

💡 Tip: Try a 15-minute daily "white space" experiment. Block this time in your calendar like you would a meeting. Use it for anything self-care: a walk, sitting in silence, or simply breathing. Track how it affects your energy and focus over one week.

→Pause and Prototype

Prototypes let us test something early—without overcommitting. Life works the same way.

For me, taking time to process emotions using apps like Headspace rather than pushing them aside has been my equivalent of rigorous user testing for mental health.

💡Tip: Choose one area of your life to prototype a change this week. Start small—maybe it's a new morning routine or a different way to structure your tasks. Document what works and iterate, just like you would with a product feature.

→ Purpose over Hustle

In life, just like in product work, hustle doesn’t equal success.

For me, I’ve learned to swerve projects and tasks that don’t align with my values, even if it means slowing down. Choosing only those quests that align has reminded me that progress isn’t about rushing—it’s about intentionality.

💡Tip: Take 30 minutes this weekend to audit your current commitments. Rate each one from 1-5 based on alignment with your values. Identify one commitment you can pause or eliminate to create space for what truly matters.

→ Set Boundaries for Energy

In product design, we implement “anti-pattern” safeguards to improve user experience, like limiting unnecessary notifications.

For me, I’ve adapted this idea by creating boundaries that protect my energy. Saying "no" or "not right now" has been a game-changer for focus and mental clarity. Sometimes, the bravest thing we can do is be still.

💡Tip: Think of boundaries as guardrails for your time and energy—they’re there to protect you from burnout. Start small: say "no" to one unnecessary meeting or try energy mapping your life (workbook shown below). These small changes can be transformative for your overall focus and clarity.

If you're feeling the pressure to always be "on," know this: It's okay to design a different way of working and living. Sometimes, the bravest thing we can do is simply be present—even (especially) when it's uncomfortable.

Like every great design, this system is still evolving. I’m constantly iterating to find what works best for this season of life.

So why did victory feel so hollow?

The answer hit me: In the past year alone, we'd sunk over 400 hours into tender processes—£40,000+ of billable time wasted on proposals that often went nowhere. Instead of creating breakthrough solutions for clients, our most skilled team members were stuck churning out bids. We weren't pushing boundaries; we were ticking boxes.

• Year 1: £100K revenue

• Year 2: Skyrocketed to £400K (300% growth)

• Year 3: Reached £600K (50% growth)

Notice that pattern? The dramatic early growth followed by stabilisation wasn't a failure - it was a deliberate choice.

We discovered that sustainable growth meant optimising what we had rather than constantly chasing more. Our most innovative and profitable work came from a core team of just three people, selectively scaling to 12 trusted contractors when needed.

Myth #2: "More Clients = More Success"

The industry pushes a simple equation: more clients equals more revenue equals more success. Our experience proved otherwise.

The real drain wasn't in finding clients - it was in chasing the wrong ones.

The drive to win more clients meant saying yes to smaller, low-value engagements that drove us further away from our niche.

Each small project consumed as much team energy as a higher-value engagement, eating away at our bandwidth for solving complex, meaningful problems.

The turning point came when we redefined our focus:

• Prioritised fewer, high-value clients

• Stopped saying yes to low-value engagements

• Built deeper expertise through focus

The first time I met my therapy bird, I thought I'd made a mistake. Another cute wellness app with cartoon mascots? But then something unexpected happened: my little digital companion tilted its head, blinked at me with surprising emotion, and asked how my day was going. Not with a generic prompt, but with the kind of genuine curiosity that made me pause, smile, and actually want to answer.

This is the story of how Finch, a mental health app, uses carefully crafted "magic" to transform one of our most dreaded daily tasks—caring for our mental health—into a journey we actually look forward to. It's not just about cute animations or gamification; it's about understanding how thoughtful product design can make difficult things feel possible.

We’ll explore three key design principles:

• Progressive discovery that builds trust naturally over time

• Micro-interactions that create delight and emotional safety

• Community features and social proof that make healing feel less lonely

Finally, I'll share my own product design explorations—three ways we could expand Finch's magical menagerie of micropets to create even deeper emotional connections.

But first, to understand why Finch's approach works so well, we need to start at the beginning.

The Origin Story: From Struggle to Magic 🐣

Finch wasn't born in some corporate boardroom with executives demanding "the next big thing in wellness." Its creators, Nino and Stephanie, were actually on their own mental health quest, fighting their own battles with depression and anxiety. They tried and failed EIGHT different times before stumbling upon this magical formula.

What’s fascinating is that their original concept had your bird companion fighting off eagles, ghosts, and even aliens! While that version didn't quite land, it reveals something crucial about product development: how sometimes the path to product magic involves a few... interesting detours.

More importantly, it shows why Finch's "magic" feels authentic—it comes from creators who intimately understood the problem they were solving. This understanding shaped every aspect of their design, starting with how they introduce users to the experience.

The First Magic Trick: Making Progress Feel Natural 🪄

One of the hardest parts of mental health work is that it feels overwhelming from day one. Most wellness apps dump their entire toolkit on you immediately: here's your meditation library, your mood tracker, your journal prompts, your breathing exercises... go fix yourself!

Finch takes a radically different approach. When you first meet your companion (affectionately called a "birb" by the community), they're just... present. They're there to chat, to listen, to keep you company. No pressure, no immediate demands for deep emotional work. Just tick some basic tasks off.

But here's where the product magic reveals itself: as your bond with your birb grows, the therapeutic elements unfold naturally:

• Day 1: Simple check-ins and makes it easy to gain energy

• Week 1: Your birb might suggest a brief breathing exercise before an adventure

• Month 1: You're naturally journaling because your birb asked about your day

• Month 3: You're practicing complex emotional regulation techniques, but it feels like you're just helping your companion explore new worlds

This gradual unfolding creates what we call an "investment loop" - the more time you spend with your birb, the more invested you become in their growth (and by extension, your own self-care journey).

It's the difference between being handed a self-help book and having a friend who helps you grow.

The Second Magic Trick: Emotional Design with Purpose ✨

What looks like mere decoration in Finch is actually careful emotional engineering. Every "magical" element serves a therapeutic purpose:

Finch creates a sense of being truly accompanied through subtle but powerful design choices:

• Idle animations (like preening or looking around) make your companion feel alive even when you're just thinking

• The satisfying sparkle of diamonds floating to your collection

• Confetti explosions that make every achievement feel like a celebration

Reinforcement Through Touch

Touch is one of our most powerful tools for emotional regulation. Finch cleverly incorporates this through:

• Haptic feedback that mimics gentle physical contact when you "pet" your birb

• Soothing, repetitive interactions during anxiety exercises

• Satisfying "weight" to achievements through perfectly timed vibrations

Emotional Safety Through Sound

The app's soundscape isn't just pleasant—it's purposefully designed to create a sense of emotional safety:

Mental health care has always had a critical flaw: it's often only available to those who can afford it. Finch tackles this challenge through what might be their most powerful feature: the Guardianship Program.

The concept is beautifully simple: users can gift memberships to others who can't afford them. But the execution is what makes it magical:

This isn't just clever product design—it's a powerful reimagining of how mental health support can work when we make it accessible to everyone.

My Quest to Add More Magic

Through daily use of Finch, I couldn't help but notice some opportunities to sprinkle even more magic dust to deepen user engagement.

Here are three areas where additional "magic" could further support users' emotional growth:

The Adoption Centre 🏰

Right now, discovering micropets in Finch feels like finding tiny treasures scattered throughout your journey. While these surprise encounters are delightful, I believe these adorable companions could play a bigger role in users' emotional growth.

I've designed an Adoption Centre where users can meet and choose their micropet companions intentionally, rather than waiting to stumble upon them. Each pet could represent different emotional strengths – perhaps a confident lion for courage, or a patient turtle for mindfulness – creating a personalised support network that grows alongside you.

Collectable Micropets 🧭

Building on the proven psychology of collection mechanics, this feature would transform self-care milestones into tangible achievements. Each rare companion would represent a significant step in the user's mental health journey, making progress visible and celebratory.

Imagine earning a rare "Phoenix" micropet after a month-long meditation streak, or a special "Starlight Owl" for completing your evening reflection routine for two weeks.

The Companion Connection 💫

Creating more ways to interact with your collected friends could deepen the emotional investment and provide additional motivation for daily check-ins.

This idea explores how multiple companions could work together to support different aspects of emotional wellbeing - like having a dedicated meditation guide, a journaling buddy, and a celebration cheerleader, each with their own unique personality and purpose.

The Secret Sauce: Where Purpose Meets Play

These three core elements—progressive discovery, micro-interactions, and community support—work together to create something greater than their parts.

After diving deep into Finch's design, I've realised their true innovation isn't in any single feature—it's in their fundamental understanding of human psychology. They've cracked the code on making mental health care feel less like a chore and more like a natural part of daily life.

This is what I call "purposeful enchantment"—where every delightful moment serves a therapeutic goal:

• When your birb celebrates your achievements, it's reinforcing positive behaviours

• Those adorable animations aren't just cute—they're creating emotional safety

• Even the collecting mechanics tap into our natural desire for progress and achievement

Product Magic You Can Use Today

Every enchanting element—from animated companions to satisfying interactions—should contribute to your core mission. Finch shows us that delight isn't just decoration; it's a powerful tool for behavioural change.

Notice how Finch starts with simple check-ins before introducing deeper therapeutic tools. Start with simple connections, then deepen the experience as users become more comfortable. This isn't just about preventing overwhelm—it's about building trust.

3. Make Progress Tangible

Finch transforms abstract concepts like "emotional growth" into visible achievements through their diamond collection system and unlockable areas. The most powerful magic makes invisible progress visible.

4. Stay Authentic to Your Origins

Ah, the good old days of MySpace and the early web — when technology felt like a playground for creativity and self-expression. Remember those days? You could customise your profile with glittery cursors, neon-coloured backgrounds, and a playlist that blasted when someone visited your page.

MySpace: So many wallpapers, endless possibilities...

It was messy, sure, but it was also *fun*. There was a sense of delight and playfulness that's often missing from today's software tools.

Too many SaaS products feel the same, devoid of personality, and make using them harder as they're just goddamn boring.

But it doesn't have to be that way. In fact, some SaaS companies are bucking the trend and creating products that feel genuinely *magical*.

Take Finch, for example — “your new self-care best friend,” an app I recently downloaded to help with self-improvement. It lets you have a virtual pet to take care of, as you take care of yourself.

Sure, it has practical features you can expect like setting goals, tracking your mood, breathing exercises and much more, but it’s the little details that make it truly a fun experience.

Having your own virtual friend to go on adventures with, dress up, customise their home, and cheer you on makes the experience different and fun. The animation and interactivity that the app delivers make the experience genuinely joyful.

Because let's be real - all the magic in the world can't save a product that doesn't get the fundamentals right.

• Personalised touches that make the product feel tailored to *you*

• Clever keyboard shortcuts and power user features that make you feel like a ninja

• Playful, on-brand language that infuses the experience with personality (words should never be an afterthought!)

Those little moments of delight turn a tool into something you genuinely *enjoy* using.

They're the details that make a product feel indispensable, rather than just another checkbox on your to-do list.

Magic Making 101: My Guide

So, how can you start injecting a little bit of that magic dust into your own products? Here are a few practical tips to get you started:

1. Sweat the Small Stuff: Don't just focus on the big, headline features. Zoom in on the tiny interactions and details that shape the overall user experience. How can you make those moments more delightful and memorable?

2. Embrace Personality: Infuse your product with a distinct brand voice and visual identity. Use language, illustrations, and micro-interactions to give the experience a sense of character and charm.

3. Empower Power Users: Build in advanced features and shortcuts that make your product feel customisable. The more you can make them feel like they're unlocking hidden superpowers, the more they'll love your product.

4. Tell a Story: Frame your product as part of a larger narrative. What's the "hero's journey" that your users are embarking on? How can you weave that story throughout the experience?

5. Iterate, Iterate, Iterate: Great products aren't built in a day. Keep a close eye on user feedback, and be willing to experiment and refine your approach over time. The magic is in the details, and those details are always evolving.
